ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Dane St. Clair made a key save in the shootout and Minnesota United defeated the Seattle Sounders 3-2 in a shootout on Monday night after the first-round opener ended in a scoreless draw between the two clubs in best-of-three regulation.
Seattle will host Game 2 on November 3rd.
St. Clair stayed in the middle and denied Alex Roldan’s penalty. And Seattle midfielder Cristian Roldan hit the crossbar in the fourth round.
For Minnesota, Kelvin Yeboah, Nektarios Triantis and Joaquin Pereira each converted penalties. Minnesota’s Julian Gressel had a chance, but his shot hit the post.
Then Seattle midfielder Danny Leyva also came off the post, giving the ball to Minnesota.
Last year, Minnesota won the first round series in two shootouts and advanced to the Western Conference semifinals.
Seattle had an underwhelming 12-3-2 record against Minnesota in regular season play, but Minnesota won both of its previous meetings with the Sounders this year.
