SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Forward Juan Agudelo, who became the youngest scorer on a modern-day U.S. national team when he scored against South Africa in 2010 at age 17, will retire at the end of the season for San Antonio of the United Soccer League Championship Second Division.
Agudelo, who turns 33 on November 23, scored three goals in 28 appearances for the United States from 2010 to 2018, scoring in all friendlies.
He was born in Colombia and immigrated to the United States when he was seven years old. He came on as a substitute at the 2009 U-17 World Cup, and made his debut for the senior team in a 1-0 win against Cape Town on November 10, 2017. This game marked the first appearance of current U.S. national team captain Tim Ream.
Agudelo was 17 years and 359 days old when he debuted. He became the youngest scorer, breaking the record of Christian Pulisic, who scored in a friendly match against Bolivia on May 28, 2016, at 17 years and 253 days old.
Agudelo has seven goals in 28 USL Championship games with San Antonio this year and was in position to make the playoffs heading into Saturday’s regular-season finale against El Paso.
He joined San Antonio for the 2024 season. He played for the New York Red Bulls (2010-12), Chivas USA (2012-13), New England (2013, 2015-19), Miami (2020), and Minnesota (2021) in Major League Soccer, as well as Birmingham in the USL (2022-23).
Agudelo signed a contract to join Stoke in January 2014. Unable to obtain work permitthen was loaned to Utrecht for the remainder of the season.
