NEW YORK (AP) – The United States plans to co-host the 2031 World Cup with neighboring countries, and the same structure will be used for next year’s men’s championship.
Mexico, Costa Rica and Jamaica were added as co-sponsors to the U.S. Soccer Federation’s proposal on Monday. It will be the only candidate considered when FIFA member nations meet on April 30 to officially decide on the venue for the expanded 48-nation tournament.
“This Women’s World Cup is the same as the Men’s World Cup in every sense of the word,” U.S. Soccer Federation President Cindy Parlow Cohn said at a press conference. “Not only do we have the same number of teams, we have the same number of games, we have the same quality of facilities, we have the same travel, accommodations and support.”
He said more than 30 U.S. cities have expressed interest in hosting the tournament in 2031, when 104 games will be played. A decision on the stadium is unlikely to be made until 2027 at the earliest.
Next year’s men’s tournament will be held at the following locations: 11 NFL stadiums (3 in Mexico, 2 in Canada)all matches from the quarterfinals onwards will be played in the United States.
FIFA, which runs the World Cup rather than local organizing committees, requires the following: Regular ticket price $6,730 and as much $73,200 Eight-game hospitality plan at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, site of the 2026 Men’s Finals on July 19th.
“The demand for a Women’s World Cup here is going to be incredible,” said USSF CEO JT Batson. “Our proprietary pricing data on ticket sales for men’s and women’s national team games shows that ticket prices are very similar.”
Batson said the USSF, FIFA, host federations and host cities will consider next summer’s tournament as part of their plans for 2031.
The 1999 Women’s World Cup was held in the United States and expanded from 12 to 16 teams, with 32 games attended by 1.2 million fans.
“A woman walking around the world in general is a political act. A woman on a soccer field is more of a political act, saying to the world, ‘I deserve to be here,'” said 2012 World Player of the Year Abby Wambach. “In 1999, FIFA didn’t believe teams could play in big soccer stadiums. And the organizing committee and the players said, ‘No, we can. We’ll figure out how to sell this.'”
The United States has won the women’s championship four times. Canada was not included in the bid. We hosted the 2015 tournament.

FIFA announced this in April of this year. USSF was the only bidder for the 2031 tournament.. The UK plan for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland was the only proposal for 2035.
The United States also hosted the 2003 tournament with four months’ notice after FIFA decided not to stick with its original host country, China, where the SARS virus outbreak occurred. Six venues were used for the tournament, which included a schedule of 15 double headers, and approximately 680,000 people attended the tournament.
Wambach isn’t worried about what the 2027 and 2031 tournaments will look like. Streaming on Netflix in the US Rather than being aired on a broadcast or cable network.
“Netflix is in a position to try something fun, unique and different that traditional media doesn’t do,” Wambach said. “Our women’s national team, we’re going to win the World Cup, right? So if we win the World Cup, I don’t care who you are. You can watch Netflix for the rest of the month.”
