DUNDEE, Scotland (AP) – Sunday’s Celtic game at Dundee was quickly abandoned after kick-off when away fans threw tennis balls and oranges onto the field in protest of the club’s hierarchy.
Players and staff from both teams helped clear the debris before Scottish Premiership action resumed at Dens Park, but defending champions Celtic lost 2-0. It was Celtic’s first loss to Dundee since 1988, leaving them five points behind leaders Hearts.
Away fans chanted and held banners calling for Celtic’s chief executive Michael Nicholson and chairman Peter Lawwell to be “dismissed by the board”.
Fans are furious at the club’s early exit from the Champions League and what they describe as an “outdated transfer strategy”.
A group called the Celtic Fans Collective has launched a campaign called ‘Not Another Penny’, calling on fans to boycott club merchandise, stadium tours, club-sponsored events and refuse to buy food and drink at Celtic Park stadium.
The campaign will be reviewed in February.
