Washington Spirit and U.S. National Team forward Trinity Rodman has suffered a Grade 1 MCL sprain in her right knee, and her return date is unknown.
Spirit coach Adrian González announced Rodman’s diagnosis on Friday ahead of Saturday’s home game against the Orlando Pride.
“Right now, we’re just going to focus on one day at a time, helping her recover, trying to heal as best as possible and seeing how she’s progressing every day,” González said.
Rodman suffered the injury on Wednesday in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup match against Mexican club Monterrey. Earlier in the day, she Named on the U.S. list Looking ahead to the upcoming three matches against Portugal and New Zealand. The United States had not yet announced her withdrawal from training camp.
Rodman was helped off the pitch in tears after attempting a tackle in the 37th minute, but later re-emerged on crutches with a brace on his right leg.
There were concerns that the injuries were serious, but Gonzalez said tests conducted Thursday showed a “best-case scenario.” Recovery time for a grade 1 MCL sprain is typically 1 to 3 weeks.
Rodman returned to Spirit in August after missing most of the summer due to back issues. She was named National Women’s Soccer League Player of the Month for September as she contributed to five of the team’s eight goals that month.
The Spirit finished second in postseason seeding behind the league-leading Kansas City Current. Playoffs begin on November 7th.
Due to back problems, Rodman has appeared in just one game for the U.S. team since the team’s win. Gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. She scored early in the match 2-0 victory over Brazil in Los Angeles in April.
Rodman was key to the U.S. team’s Olympic success as part of a powerful trio known as Triple Espresso, along with Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson.
The United States will play Portugal on Oct. 23 in Chester, Pennsylvania, and Oct. 26 in East Hartford, Conn. The United States will play New Zealand on October 29th in Kansas City, Missouri.
U.S. coach Emma Hayes said her team is currently preparing to qualify for next year’s 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
