PRAGUE (AP) – The Czech Football Association on Wednesday sacked coach Ivan Hašek following a humiliating 2-1 loss to the Faroe Islands in World Cup qualifying.
It was not immediately clear who would replace Hasek.
Czech FA president David Tranda said a coach would be appointed to lead the team until the end of the qualifying campaign. There is a high possibility that a foreign coach will be appointed permanently in the future.
Former Czech great Pavel Nedved was asked to draw up a list of possible candidates.
Sunday’s upset loss to the Faroe Islands, a territory of 55,000 people, was the Czechs’ biggest loss in qualifying for a major tournament since they lost 1-0 away to Luxembourg in the European Championship 20 years ago. At the time, they were still in the process of qualifying for the final in England.
The Czech Republic can still qualify for the 2026 World Cup. In order to secure second place in Group L and advance to the playoffs, they will need to defeat Gibraltar, another weak team, in the final match on November 17th.
Under coach Hašek, the Czech Republic lost in the group stage of the 2024 European Championship, but won the group in the Nations League and advanced to Top League A in the same year.
