Club América of Liga MX Femenil and Flamengo of Brazil’s top women’s league are the first soccer teams to take part in the second World Sevens tournament.
The professional club 7-on-7 tournament, which was launched in Portugal in May, will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Dec. 5 and 7. I have a wallet with $5 million.
Eight international club teams will participate.
“Representing Brazil in this competition is more than just a competition. It is a celebration of our club, our supporters and our vision for the future of women’s football,” Flamengo general manager Andre Rocha said in a statement Thursday.
Bayern Munich wins first world sevens eventdefeated Manchester United 2-1. Other teams taking part were Ajax, Benfica, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Roma and Rosengard.
Unlike traditional soccer, games last 30 minutes, with two 15-minute halves and unlimited substitutions. Eight teams will be divided into two groups of four teams each and compete in a round-robin format, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.
The tournament was co-founded by Gotham FC and Chelsea owner Jennifer McKessie and entrepreneur Justin Fishkin.
