COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Columbus Crew midfielder Darlington Nagbe plans to retire after the Major League Soccer playoffs, the team announced Tuesday.
The 35-year-old has won four league titles in 15 seasons in MLS. Portland (2015) ), Atlanta (2018) and Columbus ( 2020, 2023 ). He has been serving as a crew captain since 2020.
His 444 total MLS regular season appearances rank him fifth behind Nick Rimando (514), Kyle Beckerman (498), Dax McCarty (488) and Kei Kamara (463).
Nagbe scored nine goals in the regular season and two in the playoffs with Portland (2011-17), Atlanta (2018-19) and Columbus (2020-25).
He has played 25 international games, scoring one goal, and scored for the United States in a friendly against Ecuador in 2016. 2017: 2-1 loss against Trinidad and Tobago This ended the American’s streak of consecutive World Cup appearances at seven.
Born in Liberia, Nagbe moved to the United States with his family when he was 5 months old and played in Akron, where he won the Hellman Trophy in 2010 as the top men’s college soccer player. He became a US citizen when he was 15 years old.
