LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni had to leave the field to the stock after appearing to suffer a left leg injury to Southampton on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old Italian defender has made his first appearance since joining Liverpool from Palma in the offseason. However, his debut ended 81 minutes after awkwardly landing while committing to tackle in the second half of an English League Cup match at Anfield.
Liverpool won 2-1.
Leoni was treated on the sideline by Liverpool medical staff and taken away by stretcher.
“It’s not usually a good indication when players disappear like that,” Liverpool coach Arne Slot told ITV.
Leoni, who appears to be suffering from considerable pain, was expected to receive an evaluation, including an MRI scan.
“Usually, players’ emotions teach you a lot,” Slot said. “I saw a Dutch Eredivisy player who was completely out in tears over the weekend, and by the way, Reuben van Bommel is about PSV.
