Alex Morgan didn’t retire enough to change focus.
The winner of the two Women’s World Cup in the US has always been more than just a footballer, but since leaving the game, she has been dumped by various business ventures.
“I didn’t feel like I had to stop being something and start something else the next day,” she said. “It felt like I was stopping football, but it’s a continuation of many other parts of my life.”
Morgan, 36 years old I retired from soccer last year When she was pregnant with her second child. At the time, she and her husband Servando Carrasco already shared their daughter Charlie, and Morgan was playing in the San Diego waves.
Morgan was one of the first players Wave signed after the club entered the National Women’s Football League in 2021. She scored 28 goals, including the team’s first, and played 63 games against the team.
Recently, Wave retired from her 13th jersey. The national team is scheduled to honor Morgan in the October game.
Other former athletes wrote memoirs, featured the broadcast and started podcasts when they retired, but Morgan went in a different direction. She founded a venture capital company with Carrasco.
The company’s Trybe Ventures focuses on early stage companies in health technology, sports technology, media and emerging sports properties. One of its famous investments is Nothing elsea 3-on-3 women’s basketball league.
She is also partnering with JPMorgan Chase as part of an initiative to support women’s sports beyond traditional sponsorships. And she became Wave minority partners, Something that was important to her as she calls San Diego home.
Morgan had already laid the foundation for her transition. In 2021, she co-founded sports media and commerce company Togethxr, along with fellow athletes, Suberd, Chloe Kim and Simone Manuel. The company aims to highlight the story of female athletes and promote innovative media coverage of women’s sports.
TogethXR has created a “Everyone Sees Women’s Sports” T-shirt that generated $6 million in revenue.
Morgan’s work in the business side of sports is a natural progression given the rise in women’s soccer.
“When I saw the last five years of the NWSL, I have seen team ratings continue to increase and have continued to increase even more in just a few years.
Morgan played in 150 NWSL matches in her career, including stints with the Portland Thorns and Orlando Pride.
In addition to the 2015 and 2019 World Cup titles, Morgan won the Olympic gold medal in the United States in 2012. She played for the United States in 224 games with 123 goals (5th on her career list) and 53 assists. She was named the US Soccer Player of the Year in 2012 and 2018.
Off the field, Morgan advanced women’s football through the fight for equal pay. A US woman filed a lawsuit in 2019 That led to a historic agreement in 2022 It provided women with fair wages for what male American players received.
She was also committed to shedding light. Fraud and Harassment in the NWSL in 2021 That led to protection for the players’ league-wide.
Her business venture is consistent with the values of fairness and justice, not just motherhood. She founded the Alex Morgan Foundation in 2023, promoting her commitment to those issues.
“I think the only thing that really matters is to challenge yourself and know that I don’t have all the answers. If there is, I’m very slow and I have much less experience in the business world. “Also, doing it with my husband makes me feel very confident and very comfortable. You already have that sense of teamwork, so to speak, in the way I was able to rely on my entire life in sports.”
