The dire start to Aston Villa’s season continued as it was eliminated from the English League Cup on Tuesday.
Unai Emery’s team was beaten 4-2 by Brentford in a penalty shootout in the third round after a 1-1 draw in the regulation time.
Villa, who reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League last season, had not scored goals in the first four Premier League games of the campaign.
Back at GTECH Community Stadium, Villa found the net for the first time this season at least – signing Harvey Elliott after a recent 43-minute defensive error – but Aaron Hicky fined him on the 57th for a fierce volley.
Brentford goalkeeper Hakon Valdimerson made two saves from John McGinn and Matty Cash after Danish playmaker Mikel Damsgaard stroked the clinch penalty.
Crystal Palace also needed a spot kick to advance to the fourth round. In the case against the second-tier millwall, it was 1-1 in downtime and forced a penalty shootout.
The Palace won 4-2 after two saves from Argentine goalkeeper Walter Benitez.
US International Chris Richards gave the palace the lead on the 72nd, changing one of the punishments for the shootout.
Grimsby’s dream run
