A reminder to how the Champions League phase works

Manchester, UK (AP) – New Look Champions League The format brought new winners of the upset, thrill and ultimately the elite awards of European club soccer last season. Now, the European top teams are ready to go again.

It all starts on Tuesday, with the first round of games being played over the three days of this week.

Paris Saint-Germain won in May, earning his biggest victory in the tournament’s history final. However, the route to the final was not smooth and was at risk of being eliminated in the first phase.

It was the type of drama and danger I wanted when embarking on a fundamental renewal of the competition. In many cases, there were no more predictable minigroups with their favorites advanced. They had a league phase where “all games are counted” and a sense of danger was carried into the final round of fixtures. Real Madrid, Manchester City and PSG are all uncertainties of their fate.

Yes, this tournament was still won by one of the world’s most powerful and expensively assembled teams at PSG, but a new name was added to the famous old trophies, and the form shakeup created a level of unpredictability that is rare these days.

New formats have brought new risk factors

UEFA introduced a new 36-team league phase of the contest to replace the previous format of the four eight groups.

It means more teams, more games, more money. And last season, it also meant more risky for the elite.

Instead of playing every group’s opponent twice, the team plays one game against eight different aspects.

The league stage draw included four seed pots, including the highest-ranking teams in pot 1 and the lowest in pot 4. The team was portrayed to face two opponents from all pots.

As a result, more games can be played between the highest-ranked teams in the first phase. Madrid, for example, plays both Liverpool and Manchester City. PSG will play Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

This format is suitable for low ranked teams

This format makes little improvements to the chances of winners from leagues like Norway and Switzerland, but gives low teams the opportunity to build points and advance to the playoffs or 16 rounds.

Last season, Brest and Bruges made their way into the playoffs. But the young boy and Slovan Bratislava were pointless.

How many teams are progressing from the league stage?

The top eight teams advance to round 16. The next 16 teams will take part in the two-legged playoffs, with eight advances.

The team came in 9th place, and the team that came in 24th place played in 23rd and 23rd place.

Last year, when the previous two champions, Madrid and Manchester City met in the playoffs, led to more drama, eliminating City.

Don’t read too much of the final league rankings

Liverpool came to the top in the league stage – beating Madrid, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen – but the PSG struggle meant they had to advance through the playoffs, and the pair were drawn to each other in the 16th round.

Having scored eight points after finishing 14 locations under Liverpool, PSG won a two-legged matchup and lifted the trophy.

Liverpool coach Arne Slot explained his team “That’s why it’s so unlucky.” Later to face “one of the best teams in Europe” Losing 4-1 in a penalty shootout. “That’s the way we’re in, and we have to accept that,” he said.

A big game will soon be released

Newly crowned world champion Chelsea marks his return to the Champions League on Wednesday with a delicious trip to Bayern Munich. The same night, PSG began defending against Atalanta, and Liverpool has a test home game against Atletico Madrid.

Newcastle hosts Barcelona and Manchester City will be at home against Italian champion Napoli on Thursday.

Can someone stop PSG?

Last season’s victory ended the long wait for PSG to conquer Europe. Now the challenge is to stay there and do what Madrid has managed in the Champions League era. Hold the trophy.

Luis Enrique’s team’s swashbuckling style seemed to be in a new era of European football. The dominant performance against Inter Milan in the final set.

However, it is notoriously difficult to hold the trophy, and PSG’s rivals were strengthened to defeat the French giants.

In particular, Liverpool spent about $500 million to improve the team that won the Premier League last season.

Meanwhile, Madrid has acquired a new coach for Xabi Alonso, but Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City Rebuild has seen its arrival of around $500 million since January.

When will the Champions League final be?

The Champions League final will be on May 30, 2026, at Puskas Alana in Budapest.
