Cristiano Ronaldo’s emotional homage to Diogo Jota silences critics with Portugal’s return to the pitch

Cristiano Ronaldo has spent more than 20 years carrying the weight of hopes on Portugal, but on Friday night he carried something heavier in Yerevan.

In Portugal’s first match since the tragic death of the Liverpool forward in a car accident in Spain, Ronaldo has brought tributes that tell more remarkable stories than any words or Instagram posts.

The 39-year-old scored twice in Portugal’s 5-0 Armenia demolition in World Cup qualifiers, but it was his first goal in the 21st minute that was remembered.

Ronaldo pointed to the sky with an undeniably intended gesture at Jota, who was wearing the number 21 shirt for his country. For players who have built their careers at the time, it was impossible to overlook the symbolism.

Jota, who passed away along with his brother Andre on July 3rd, was more than a number of his teammates. Joan Felix, who opened the score in 10 minutes, added a second later, and Joa Cancello scored his goal in Jota’s Signature PlayStation celebration.

One of Jota’s closest friends, Reuben Neves, switched his shirt number to 21 in his honor, from the time he was together in the wolf.

Before kickoff, the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium was silent at a moment of memory. The player stood arms, arms, and arms, as the image of Jota appeared in the stands among supporters travelling from Portugal.

The compliments were also widening beyond the pitch, but Neves revealed his tattoo earlier this summer with Jota on his legs, but Liverpool confirmed they would retire from his No. 20 shirt.

“Cristiano’s gesture was perfect,” one fan wrote in a post-match report on Portuguese television. “When I came in 21 minutes, it felt like fate.”

Ronaldo’s celebration also served as a pointed response to those who criticized Jota’s absence at Gondomar. His decision not to attend sparked debate in Portugal, with some suggesting it was rude.

However, his sister, Katia Aveiro, explained in a heartfelt Instagram post that her brother chose to leave his respect for fear that his presence would mask the sadness of his family.

“When our father passed away, the cameras and the crowd made everything unbearable,” she wrote. “Cristiano didn’t want that from Diogo’s family. He chose not to make their pain worse.”

While that explanation did not silence all detractors, Ronaldo’s performance in Armenia still provided clear indications of his respect for his former teammate. His tributes were raw, personal and impossible to ignore.

Jota’s legacy with Portugal

Jota, who played 49 times for Portugal and scored 14 goals, has become an important part of the national setup since his debut in 2019.

He and Ronaldo combined seven goals together, including a victory in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League a few weeks before the accident.

At the club level, his career spans the successful spells with Wolves and Liverpool, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield.

The Liverpool mural testifies to the connections he has made with his fans, and his teammates, from Mohamed Sarah to Luis Diaz, are publicly respected.

His sudden death at just 27 years old leaves a void that cannot be met, but Friday’s match shows how deeply his spirit has been woven into the fabric of Portuguese football.

A symbolic victory

Portugal’s 5-0 victory pushed them further along the path to World Cup qualifying, but the night was less about the points than catharsis.

Roberto Martinez’s team played with Sharpness, which suggested they wanted to honor Jota with more than just a gesture.

“Tonight was about Diogo,” Martinez later told reporters. “Every pass, every goal, every celebration carried his memory.”

For Ronaldo, who has been praised for decades and scrutinized on comparable scales, the tribute may mark a turning point.

Although criticism of his absence at the funeral will never be forgotten, Yerevan’s actions on the pitch felt like a definitive answer.

As Portugal aims for the rest of the qualifying campaign, Jota’s memories remain close.

For at least one night, the team united their sadness by reminding the world of the power of football.
