LONDON (AP) – A second man has been arrested in connection with an abusive social media message sent to English player Jess Carter at the Women’s European Championship, police said Thursday.
The 30-year-old from Ripley, Derbyshire, was arrested and released on bail on suspicion of malicious communication.
It continues 59-year-old man arrested Police said from Great Harwood on August 28th, as part of the same investigation.
The British Football Police Force began an investigation after reporting from England’s defender Carter in July I received a “racist and abusive message.”
Carter, who has an African-American father and plays club soccer for Gotham FC in the US, revealed that he was racially abused online in 2025 in Switzerland. England ultimately won.
“No one should be subjected to such nasty abuse, and I want to make it clear that racist abuse of this nature is unacceptable,” said Mark Roberts, Chief of Cheshire Constabrary, National Police Chief of Football Police. “Everyone is responsible for what they do and say. We want to ensure that criminals don’t hide behind their social media profiles in order to post vulgar comments.”
