LONDON (AP) – Grimsbytown has been fined £20,000 ($26,750) for feeling its historic player Beat Manchester United last week.
The fourth tier team produced one of the biggest disruptions in English football to knock United out of the British League Cup after a penalty shootout.
However, it has been revealed since then that Grimsby player Clark O’Dour was not qualified to play as he was not registered in time to participate in the second round match.
The English Football League said it issued a fine on Tuesday, of which $13,375 will be suspended until the end of the season.
Oduor was registered one minute after the deadline the day before the match, finishing in a 2-2 draw, with Grimsby winning 12-11 in the shootout.
“The club self-reported the violation upon discovery the day after the fixture was completed,” the league said.
The infringement was not intentional and added that Grimsby’s part “we are not intending to deceive or mislead.”
