GRIMSBY, UK (AP) — Manchester United manager Reuben Amorim said his player “speaks really loudly for me” after falling into one of the most embarrassing losses in the club’s history on Wednesday.
United were beaten 12-11 with a penalty shootout The second round of the League Cup was by Grimsby Town, the fourth tier of English Soccer. United achieved a 2-0 target, 2-0, snatching a 2-2 draw and forced a shootout.
Driving into his own players, Amorim praised Grimsby for being “the only team on the pitch.”
“The best players lose because a team can beat a group of players,” Amorim said.
Amorim accused his team of playing “without intensity.”
“We’re completely lost and it’s hard to explain, so I think they really spoke out loud,” he said.
Amorim asked what the specific comment meant, “I think it was clear what happened today.”
Amorim led United to 15th place in the Premier League last season. This is the lowest competition ever. They have not won three games this season.
“We’ll play a game over the weekend (against Burnley) and then two weeks (during an international break) and we’ll sort things out,” Amorim said when asked where Grimsby’s results left him and his team.
