BRAUNSCHWEIFIG, Germany (AP) — Stuttgart’s German Cup title defense began with a drama-filled 8-7 victory on Tuesday with Eintro Hat Braunschwafig’s penalty after their match ended 4-4 after an extra time.
After Alexander Nübel already saved the three for the visitors, the new signature Lorenz Assignon attacked Stuttgart’s victory penalty (20th in the shootout).
“I think the fans enjoyed it more than we did on the field,” said Stuttgart forward El Medin De Milovich, who scored two goals in normal times, as well as a penalty in the shootout.
Braunschweig got off to a good start in the second division with two wins from three games, but quickly showed that he wasn’t over-occurring with the defending champions.
Sven Kohler put the home side early on early on a strike from a distance that Nübel should have been away after he put his hand in the ball.
Demilovich replied four minutes later with a diving header to Maximilian Mittelzedo’s cross.
However, Fabio di Michele Sanchez on his left back equalized by living a fierce shot on the roof of the net from the narrowest angle of the 77th, then scored another epic goal to give Braunschwig a 3-2 lead with the rest of his normal time.
German forward Nick Urtemaid got equal after four minutes and sent the game to extra time. There, Stuttgart’s Tiago Thomas forced his own goal from the wise BA before Christian Joe Conte again pulled Braunschweig levels to send the game to a penalty.
