Man United loses to the town of Grimsby in a League Cup penalty

GRIMSBY, England (AP) — Manchester United sank to a new lowest under Reuben Amorim by being eliminated in Grimsby Town on the fourth floor after a marathon penalty shootout in the second round of the English League Cup on Wednesday.

Grimsby scored 12-11 on a spot kick at 9,000 capacity Brandel Park on the east coast of England, and Brian Mbemo missed a decisive penalty. United needed a slow goal by Mbeumo and Harry Maguire to save the 2-2 draw in regulation as they tracked 2-0 at halftime.

It went down as one of the most embarrassing results in United history, and after a disastrous finish of 15th place in the Premier League last season, they didn’t win the team in three games in this campaign.

Grimsby’s jubilant fans raided the field to celebrate alongside the players after Mbeumo’s spot kick rebounded the crossbar and sealed United’s fate.

“It’s an amazing feeling. You can live forever,” said Grimsby’s Charles Burnham, who won one of the team’s goals.

Grimsby is currently fourth in League 2 and finished the match with a lineup that includes several academy alumni and Faeroe Islands International.

Meanwhile, United had a new signature of £200 million ($270 million) in attacks at Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. Cunha also failed in the shootout by saving his weak attempts, and Sesko took United’s 10th penalty. Be ahead of goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The shootout returned to the outfielder once Onana and Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym converted the penalty. Bruno Fernandez scored for United, but Mbeumo couldn’t.

“We went into the penalty shootout, Gaffer (the manager) told us, ‘Youngers, all the pressure is on them,’ and that was really true,” Grimsby midfielder Kieran Green said.

It was a bittersweet moment for Pim. He states:

Pressure on Amorim

The result is pressure on Amorim, who joined the game with 16 wins from 44 games in charge of United after being hired in November. He sat in the dugout during the shootout and didn’t even see the kick.

A 1-0 loss to Arsenal in the opening round of the Premier League featured an encouragemental performance by a new look United team, but a worrying old habit has returned when fading to a 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday.

Grimsby’s exit quickly regained the darkness of last season.

“The way we started the game without any intensity has been completely lost,” said Amorim, who apologised to United fans.

United were only playing in the second round, their first since 2014, after not competing in the European competition last season. That year, the team lost 4-0 at third-tier MK Don in the second round.

A big victory for Brighton

In other results on Wednesday, Brighton won 6-0 at Oxford in the second tier, while Everton beat Mansfield 2-0 in the third tier, while Fulham won 2-0 against second tier Bristol City.
