LEBAKUSENS, Germany (AP) — Bayer LeBAKUSENS signed just behind Lucas Vazquez on a free transfer to former Real Madrid.
The Bundesliga club said Tuesday that 34-year-old Vazquez will sign a two-year contract until June 2027 and will wear No. 21 in his jersey.
“We have signed a very experienced player who has won everything in the last decade to win at Real Madrid,” said Simon Rolfs, Leverkusen sports director. “He has great techniques and is well versed in tactics, a great provider and strategist. Lucas has a big impact on our game with his football finesse and special routines, and he will become an important part of our team.”
Lolfes oversaw a major overhaul of the team that won the 2024 Bundesliga under Zavia Lonso since the Spanish coach returned to Madrid after last season ended. The major players such as Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah and Jeremie Frimpong are all left, and Vázquez is expected to replace the latter behind the right.
Vazquez won the trophy host against Madrid, including five champion leagues and four Spanish league titles, after rejoining the club in 2015 after a loan season with Espanyol. Vazquez joined Madrid Youth Academy in 2007 as a 16-year-old. He made 402 appearances, attacking the midfielders, mainly as the right rear, but also as the front, and contributed from the bench.
Madrid paid tribute to Vazquez. One of the great legends His departure was announced in July of the club.
“Now I look forward to continuing my career at Bayer Leverkusen,” Vazquez was quoted as saying by the German club. “I’ve heard a lot about Xabi Alonso’s club and his longtime teammate, Madrid’s Dani Carvajal.”
Vasquez was able to make his debut at Welder Bremen on Saturday.
