Vancouver, B.C. (AP) – Thomas Muller scored on a penalty kick in the 14th minute of the second half of the suspension, bringing the Vancouver White Caps to a 3-2 victory over St. Louis City on Saturday night.
Muller made his first start and second appearance in Vancouver (14-6-7) since coming from Bayern Munich, Germany, and won the penalty kick after Mathias Laborda was fouled by Mykhi Joyner.
St. Louis City jumped for a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Eduardo Lewen scored the fourth goal of the season using a pass from Conrad Warlem. Worem’s helper was third in his first season in the league.
Vancouver tied it at halftime when Brian White scored on a penalty kick in the four minutes of suspension. White hit his 14th goal after Chris Durkin’s Tristan Blackmon led to a penalty shootout. White has eight goals in six career matches against St. Louis City, including a hat-trick in his victory at BC Place last season.
St. Louis City (5-16-6) took a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute with Joan Klaus’ eighth goal. San Bin John notched his first assist in his fourth assist since coming from Minnesota United, and assisted twice in 70 appearances.
Daniel Rios went down for White in the 77th minute and scored an equalizer on the 79th with an assist from Sebastian Barhalter. This was Rios’ second goal, and Berharter’s career-high sixth assist.
Yohei Takaoka had two saves in Whitecaps.
Roman Bürki stopped four shots for the city of St. Louis, 1-10-3 on the road this season.
The Whitecaps are looking to make their first postseason for the third year in a row, but seven games remained and they are third in the Western Conference.
St. Louis City will be holding the Houston Dynamo on Saturday. The Whitecaps will return to league play on September 13th, hosting the Philadelphia Union.
