SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – The national women’s soccer league match between Bay FC and Washington Spirit at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Saturday set an attendance record for the US Women’s Professional Sports League with 40,091 sold out audiences.
The crowd broke previous records for last season’s standalone NWSL match set, watching Bay FC play the Chicago star at Wrigley Field.
Saturday’s game at the San Francisco Giants home in baseball was called the “Show at Oracle Park.”
Spirit won 3-2.
“The atmosphere was fantastic,” said Spirit coach Adrian Gonzalez. “I think having the setup, the fans and the opportunity to experience something like this is unique to players, to the staff, to the soccer community, to the fans.
The former Giants left Fielder and Barry Bond, the leader of baseball’s career home run, joined the game.
Bay FC chased 3-0 early, but came back to fill the gap.
“The players deserve it. They work hard and this league has come a very long way,” Bay FC manager Albertin Montoya said of the crowd. “I think that’s one person who saw you when you get football like that and you could see that game and say, ‘Hey, I’ll do this again.’ It was very high quality football. ”
