Buenos Aires (AP) – Copa Sudamelicana’s match between Indipendiente and the University of Dechile was suspended late Wednesday due to spectator violence at the Argentine club’s stadium.
Supporters of the University of De Chile reportedly threw things from the visitor section of their home fans and forced a partial evacuation of the Livatadres de America Stadium in Buenos Aires.
Despite security interventions, the violence continued, leading to clashes between rival supporters before Uruguayan referee Gustavo Tejera ordered a round of 16 return matches to be stopped with a score that was 1-1.
Conmebol, the South American governing body of football, later announced in a social media post that the game had been cancelled.
This allowed the University of Chile to advance to the quarterfinals 2-1 in the tally after a 1-0 victory at Santiago in the first leg.
