RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) – Davide Ancelotti, son of Brazilian manager Carlo Ancelotti, has won his first Copa Libertador match as the new manager of defending champion Botafogo.
The 35-year-old Ancelotti joined the Brazilian club in July and had his first experience as a full-time coach.
Botafogo defeated Ecuador’s La Liga Dequito 1-0 at Nilton Santos Stadium in the first game of the 16 tie late Thursday. Striker Arthur scored 14 seconds later.
For official purposes, assistant Cláudio Cacapa has signed match-related documents as Botafogo’s coach. According to Botafogo, Ancelotti had not received full approval from Conmebol to play the role.
Last month, Ancelotti was signed until 2026 after Botafogo owner John Textor fired Renato Paiva following the team’s 16 eliminations at the Club World Cup.
The Italian has worked with his father in various roles in Bayern Munich, Naples, Everton and Real Madrid for over a decade. He is also a member of the staff at Ancelotti, Brazil.
Botafogo is a title holder for Brazilian and Copa liberta dolls.
