SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Preston Judd scored in four minutes of second half stoppage time to win the San Jose earthquake 2-1 with the Vancouver White Caps on Saturday night.
Judd infiltrated for Josef Martinez in the 81st minute and used assists from defenders DeJuan Jones and Jammer Ricketts to win the fourth time this season. Jones’ helper was his career-high No. 5 after notching three times through his first 157 appearances. The Ricketts ranked third in San Jose (8-10-8) in their first full season in the league.
Judd’s goal came after Brian White scored in the 88th minute and pulled Vancouver (13-6-6) after the White Caps played most of the game with most shorthanded hands. Defender Edie Ocampo was forced to exit in 27 minutes after receiving two yellow cards in eight minutes. Defender Tristan Blackmon notched his first assist this season and his second assist in 169 career appearances on White’s 12th goal.
Martinez scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute, giving San Jose a 1-0 lead. The penalty kick was awarded after Vitor Costa was fouled by Blackmon. This was Martinez’s 11th goal of the season and the 127th of his career. Martínez needs six more goals to tie Jaime Moreno to fifth place all the time.
Daniel de Souza Britt finished with two saves for San Jose.
Yohei Takaoka saved the three shots for Vancouver.
The victory was his first season under Bruce Arena, and he piled up the earthquake in 8th place in the Western Conference. The top nine teams will advance to the postseason.
Vancouver will fall 6-4-4 on the road this season. Six of Whitecaps’ final nine games are at home.
The White Caps will host the Houston Dynamo on August 17th. The earthquake will host San Diego FC on August 17th.
