LONDON (AP) – A tribute to former Liverpool forward Dio Gojota and his brother Andre Silva was confused on Sunday when some fans of the Community Shield match failed to observe the momentary silence.
Before the match between Liverpool and Crystal Palace in Wembley, the team and their staff stood quietly in memory of their brothers. He died in a car accident in Spain July – But a loud voice was heard in the crowd, prompting some boos.
Judge Chris Cavanagh blew his whi away to signal the end of the tribute.
This was Liverpool’s first major game since the death of 28-year-old Jota.
The brothers died when the Lamborghini fell off the road and exploded into flames near Zamora in the northwest.
The Premier League champion has paid much tribute to Jota after his death, including retiring from the 20th place jersey.
Liverpool supporters began to praise Jota as Sunday’s match reached the 20-minute mark, and his applause quickly erupted into cheers, with Jeremy Fripon scoring to win the Merseyside Club 2-1.
Community Shield is seen in the traditional Curtain Razor of England’s top flight season and is played between the defending league champion and the FA Cup winner.
