Southampton, England (AP) — Wrexham was denied a Hollywood-style ending when he returned to the second tier of British football on Saturday.
Josh Windus’ penalty kick in the 22nd minute saw Wrexham’s first victory in the Welsh team’s first division game in 43 years.
However, Irish defender Ryan Manning was equal on the 90th with a great free kick above the wall in the right post, and sent Jack Stevens to the far post on the 97th to thrust the winning goal into the roof of the net.
Wrexham missed out on many changes to build up the initiative. Ryan Hardy may have scored on the 87th, but goalkeeper Gavin Baznu tilted his left foot shot very well.
Southampton came closest to the break when Jay Robinson hit the post. Connor Cody cleared Adam Armstrong’s efforts from the rebound. Wrexham signed Cody from Leicester. He arrived with a 198-game Premier League experience.
Wrexham enjoys a spectacular rise under celebrity co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Just three years ago, Wrexham played non-league soccer in the fifth tier of England.
After three straight promotions, Wrexham will take part in the championship. It is one of the Premier League tiers and is well known as one of the toughest divisions in football.
Saturday’s finale showed how difficult it was for Wrexham.
Welsh clubs have long played in the English league system for historic reasons, where Welsh clubs have been playing in the English league system. The first league representing all Wales was founded in 1992 only.
