SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – Captain Song Heung-min announced he will be leaving Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
At a media conference in Seoul, his son said his decision to leave the English Premier League club was “the most difficult” of his career, and that the club is supporting him with the goal of moving to another club.
The Spurs will be playing Newcastle United in their preseason friendly in Seoul on Sunday, and in their final match of Son’s time with the Spurs.
“Before we start a press conference, we just want to share information that we decided to leave this club this summer,” my son said. “In my respect, this club has helped me make my decision, so I just wanted to share this information before we started the meeting.”
“I came to North London as a child, 23 years old. I’m very young and I’m extremely proud to have a young boy leave this club as a grown man who doesn’t speak English.”
He continued his tribute by thanking Tottenham fans.
“So I just want to thank all the Spurs fans who gave me so much love and felt like it was my home,” he said. “It was one of the toughest decisions I have ever made, so I hope that goodbye will also be at a good time you know, but I think it’s the right time to make this decision.
When asked in Korean about his future play plans, he replied: “I don’t think there is an answer yet.”
He also confirmed in Korean that he will play for Korea at the World Cup in North America next year.
