Foxborough, Massachusetts (AP) – Matt Turner is back to his MLS roots as he returned to position to compete for his job as goalkeeper for the US national team.
Turner will take part in the New England Revolution on loan from French League 1 Club Lyon until June 2026, the revolution announced on Friday. The deal includes the option to buy Turner’s contract, which will become a designated player on the Revolutionary Roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He is eligible for target allocation money in 2026.
One of the reasons Turner has been replaced New York City FC’s Matt Freeze was goalkeeper US starter Matt Freeze for the Concaf Gold Cup match in June and July.
Turner, 31, became No. 1 US goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup, starting 14 consecutive competitive matches in the US before the Gold Cup, starting 23 of 24.
Turner is aiming to return to that level in New England, where he made his professional debut in 2016.
He last played for New England in 2022, recording a 53.3% save percentage in five starts.
