mThe spell, which includes Sarah’s trophy with Liverpool, is set to last a decade after Egypt’s rich forward signs a new contract with the Premier League leader and ends months of uncertainty in his future.
Sarah, 32, was one of three key senior players, Trent Alexander Arnold and Virgil van Dick.
He was the first to extend his stay, establishing himself as a great club with 243 goals in 394 appearances, and finished third on Liverpool’s list of all-time best scorers.
Liverpool did not reveal the length of Sarah’s new contract in an announcement Friday, but manager Arne Slot told a two-year deal in a press conference.
“Of course I’m very excited,” Sarah said. “We have a great team now, we have a great team before, but I signed it because I think we have the opportunity to win other trophies and enjoy my football.
“It’s amazing, I had the best years here. I played eight years. I hope I’ll be 10. I enjoy my life here and enjoy my football. I have had the best years of my career.”
Sarah has been tied up as the top Premier League goalscorer in three seasons or tied up alone, and was voted twice as a league player of the year, lifting seven major trophies, including the 2020 Premier League and the 2019 Champions League.
27 goals to lead Sarah’s league, Liverpool has taken an 11-point lead in the Premier League in search of a record 20th English top flight title.
“I want to tell (the fans), I’m so happy to be here,” Sarah said. “We signed here because we believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us, we will do our best to do that.
Slot said he had known for a while that Sarah would likely be staying at Liverpool, and praised sports director Richard Hughes for securing the forward’s future.
“Mo Salah is such a great player that as a free agent, you can probably go to every club in the world wherever you are,” Slot said. “But he stayed at our club.”
Now, Van Dick and Alexander Arnold are turning their attention to whether they will commit their future to Liverpool following Sarah.
Van Dijk, a Dutch command centre who has been in Anfield since 2018, said in comments that he reported he was approaching signing a new contract.
“Yeah, there’s progress,” the Liverpool captain said. He turned 34 in July. “Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see.”
However, Alexander Arnold is most likely to leave Liverpool as Liverpool was heavily linked to his move to Real Madrid.
