Liverpool FC striker and Portuguese national football team Dio Gojota died early on Thursday, July 3rd in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora, Spain.
The young Premier League striker is 28 years old and recently married his partner Rute Cardoso, father of three children. Furthermore, the accident claimed the life of his younger brother Andre Silva, who is also a professional soccer player for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
What happened to Diogo Jota?
According to Guardia Civil, the accident occurred around 00:35 hours on 65km of the A-52 expressway, at the height of Cernadilla city in the Sanabria region.
The first hypothesis suggests that his Lamborghini tires could have burst while trying to overtake another car, suggesting that Jota lost control, crashed, and the car set fire to fire, causing both deaths.
Witnesses to the incident immediately warned emergency services when they saw the fire spread even in nearby vegetation. Despite the prompt response from the emergency team, residents were not able to be saved alive. The identity of the deceased was confirmed by document found at the scene and vehicle registration. Diogo Jota’s wife was the official body identification person, and she received psychological assistance after the tragedy.

Dio Gojota, who joined Liverpool in 2020, played 182 matches for the English club, scoring 65 goals and won three titles, including the recent Premier League. He is also international with Portugal and has won the Nations League twice.
