Manchester City and the Premier League are awaiting a verdict on charges brought against the club for allegedly breaching financial regulations over a nine-year period.
Senior Premier League officials are said to expect a verdict on Manchester City’s 115 charges to be handed down this month. The 12-week hearing will begin in September 2024 and the decision will remain secret.
Citi was accused of 115 breaches of financial regulations over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018 after its acquisition by Abu Dhabi United Group. The club has maintained its innocence on all counts throughout the process.
City face a range of charges, including 54 charges of failing to provide accurate financial information between 2009-10 and 2017-18, as well as failing to provide accurate details of player and manager payments over the same period. Other fees relate to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Rules and the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.
The charges were first brought in 2023, and there was a long wait for results. The sheer number of charges and their severity are the main reasons the case has dragged on, but the wait is expected to end soon, according to The Independent.

The process is shrouded in some mystery. Premier League CEO Richard Masters has been invited to attend the event several times, but declined to provide details. In July 2025, Masters told NBC, “You can ask me, our rules are very clear and it’s a confidential process, so I can’t give you any information about timing or anything like that,” adding, “I can’t add anything to that.”
“The only point I can speak publicly about this is when a decision has been made,” Masters said, after former Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy criticized the length of the process.
“I can’t speculate why or when, but that’s all I can really say. Daniel is not in the same position as me, so I can’t speak to that,” he concluded.
When the charges were made public in 2023, Citi vigorously defended itself. They expressed surprise and welcomed the independent commission. The Premier League side maintained their innocence and said they had “comprehensive evidence of irrefutable evidence”. The club said in a statement: “We look forward to a complete conclusion to this matter.”
City manager Josep Guardiola has previously said he intends to remain at the club regardless of the result. “Six months ago, a year ago, when all the clubs were accusing us of doing something, I said: What if we get relegated? I’m here,” he said.
“I don’t know what position in the conference they’re going to call us in. We’re going to stand up and get back on our feet and get back to the Premier League. We knew it then and we feel it now.”
