Sir Jim Ratcliffe reveals his feelings towards Glazers | Soccer | Sports

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stepped up to defend the Glazer family’s controversial reign at Old Trafford. The American owners have faced relentless criticism from supporters ever since a leveraged takeover in 2005 left the club with massive debts that now stand at £725m.

Several advocacy groups voiced fierce opposition to the 20-year-old deal. British business tycoon Ratcliffe bought a 27.7% stake in United in early 2024 in a $1.2 billion deal after negotiations with the Glazer family.

Ineos’ CEO was given control over the club’s football operations and strategic decisions. The 72-year-old currently appears on the Times’ business podcast to give his assessment of United Airlines’ polarizing shareholder.

“They get a terrible reputation… but they’re really good people and really passionate about the club,” he said.

When asked about his working relationship with his family, Ratcliffe revealed that his family was happy to allow him to take command. “That probably sums it up,” he continued.

“We’re local and they’re across the pond. It’s a long way to go to run a football club of the size and complexity of Manchester United. We’re here with our feet on the ground.”

Ratcliffe has been powerless to reverse United’s decline on the pitch since the Ineos organization took over responsibility for footballing matters at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils finished 15th last season, their worst result in the Premier League era. One of the key decisions made by the British owners was to appoint Ruben Amorim as head coach, a move that has come under scrutiny as United continue to struggle under his leadership.

However, Ratcliffe rubbished speculation that the Portuguese manager would be shown the door.

Asked about the possibility that the Glazers would direct Amorim’s removal, Ratcliffe was adamant that would not happen.

After the international break, United are scheduled to play away to Liverpool on Sunday 19 October, with kick-off scheduled for 4:30pm UK time.
