Manchester United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has hinted he will give Ruben Amorim more time amid pressure on the manager. The Red Devils have had a shaky start to the season and currently sit 10th in the table.
They beat Sunderland 2-0 in their last encounter and are heading into their second international break of the season in good form. He will be hoping to continue that when he faces rivals Liverpool at Anfield after a two-week break.
Despite there being only seven games left in the season, there is a lot of speculation and talk about Amorim’s future, especially after their disappointing 15th place finish last season. The manager was favored in the transfer market and spent around £200m on a new contract.
Brian Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesco were among the players to join Old Trafford in the summer. This is a serious transfer move and Ratcliffe is hopeful of seeing results.
United’s co-owner spoke about Amorim’s future in an interview with The Business Podcast. Let’s see what was said here.
About “sudden” reactions
“Sometimes the media don’t understand. They want overnight success.
“They think it’s a light switch. You flip the switch and tomorrow everything will fall apart. You can’t run a club like Manchester United with a knee-jerk reaction to journalists who turn on the switch every week.”
About the relationship with the Glaser family
Ratcliffe said the Glazer family was happy to hold him accountable. “That probably sums it up,” he said.
“We’re local and they’re across the pond. It’s a long way to go to run a football club of the size and complexity of Manchester United. We’re here with our feet on the ground.”
Asked what he would do if the Glazers told him to fire Amorim, he said, “I don’t think that would happen.”
Amorim tips
Mr Ratcliffe described Mr Amorim as “a good guy” and sent hints about his future.
“He hasn’t had the best season. Ruben has three years to prove he’s a great manager and that’s what I have to do,” he said.
