Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has declared that the Glazer family will not intervene in any decisions regarding head coach Ruben Amorim’s future. United’s manager has come under scrutiny following a poor start to the new Premier League season.
The club currently sits in 10th place in the table with 10 points from seven league games. A 2-0 win over Sunderland in their most recent encounter has temporarily calmed speculation, but further downturn could reignite such debate.
Ratcliffe will be one of the pivotal figures in determining Amorim’s future. He acknowledged the frustration among some supporters, but suggested he was willing to give the manager extra time.
“Dear reporters, sometimes I just don’t understand,” Ratcliffe told The Business Podcast. “They want overnight success.
“They think it’s a light switch. You flip the switch and tomorrow everything will fall apart. You can’t run a club like Manchester United with a knee-jerk reaction to journalists who turn on the switch every week.”
Mr Ratcliffe said he had discussed his relationship with the Glaser family and was satisfied that they would allow him to take over management. Asked how he would respond if the Glazers ordered Amorim’s firing, Ratcliffe acknowledged that such a situation would not arise.
United’s Portuguese manager signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford in November last year. Mr Ratcliffe indicated he was willing to give more time to turn things around.
Ineos believes he can prove his worth over the full three years of his contract, despite the head coach admitting he has had a poor start to life at Old Trafford. This is the result United’s co-owners are hoping for, although they acknowledge the past year has been difficult.
United will resume Premier League action after the international break with an away game against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday 19 October (4.30pm kick-off).
