Amorim has won 19 of United’s 50 games in charge, and Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland was United’s third of the season. Ratcliffe admitted the 2025/26 season has had a rocky start, but said the division will not be reactionary in the face of early-season adversity.
“Dear press, sometimes I don’t understand. They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. They flip the switch and tomorrow everything will fall apart.”
“You can’t run a club like Manchester United by reacting randomly to journalists who abuse you on a weekly basis.”

Amorim inherited a difficult situation and was appointed after Ten Hag won just three of United’s opening nine Premier League games for the 2024/25 season.
Asked if Amorim would be given a three-year term, Ratcliffe replied: “Yes, that’s what I would do. Three years. Because football doesn’t happen overnight.”
Ineos’ chairman and CEO compared Amorim’s position to that of Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, with the Spaniard enduring some difficult periods in his early years in charge and comfortably establishing the team as one of the best in the Premier League.
Ratcliffe said: “You also have to look at Arteta at Arsenal. He had a terrible first few years. We have to be patient. We have a long-term plan. This is not a switch.”
Billionaire Ratcliffe completed his purchase of a minority stake in United in February 2024.
Asked what would happen if the Glazer family, United’s majority owners, told Amorim to fire him, Ratcliffe said: “That’s not going to happen.”

“That probably sums it up. We’re local and they’re across the pond. It’s a long way to go trying to manage a football club as big and complex as Manchester United. We’re here with our feet on the ground.”
“They (Glazers) get a bad rap…but they’re really good guys and really passionate about the club.”
United currently sit 10th in the Premier League and have won three of their last five Premier League games this season.
They will return to action on October 19th when they play away to champions Liverpool.
