Rio Ferdinand has suggested Steven Gerrard would jump at the chance to make a sensational return to Rangers, with the Manchester United icon confident his former England teammate will impress the Ibrox chief in interview. Gerrard made waves on Tuesday when he announced that he had met Rio Ferdinand on the podcast.
The man who led GERS to their only title in 14 years was approached about a dramatic move back to Glasgow in the summer, but felt the timing wasn’t right as he became a grandfather for the first time and didn’t leave Al Ettifaq for Saudi Arabia for long. However, Ferdinand is of the opinion that Gerrard would accept an emotional return to Rangers if American businessman Andrew Cavenag comes knocking again.
Speaking to Talksport, he said: “When I interviewed him he left me in no uncertain terms that he wanted to be manager and he was completely confident in doing that.”
“He’s itching to come back now. He never said this to me, but I personally just think of the energy that I felt in that room.
“What I felt, if I were the owner of a football club and Steven Gerrard was sitting in front of me, I could feel the energy in the room as I was interviewing him – he’s got the job.
“Forget what he did before. But his time at Rangers too, he did great things there. I never had too many Rangers fans soaking up the comments on my social media or my podcast.
“They’re all desperate for him to get up and at least have a conversation and a meeting. So with Steven Gerrard being the manager again, Rangers would probably be one of my big bets.”
