Jamie Carrager believes Manchester United’s sacking of Reuben Amorim is “inevitable” and believes he will be fired by Christmas. Despite winning his third win of the season against Sunderland over the weekend, Old Trafford still has some fundamental problems. Amorim is approaching its first anniversary since he took command of the Red Devils, but there is little reason to celebrate.
Since taking office, United has recorded one of the weakest records in the Premier League, with last season being the worst season ever. The campaign has enjoyed the preseason and has spent more than £200 million on winning a new contract, but has only achieved minimal progress. The Portuguese manager has been committed to the 3-4-3 formation, which has always caused problems for the team.
United’s leadership still stands behind Amorim and is confident that he is worth playing the full season to prove himself with the team. But Carrager claims that former manager Sporting Lisbon will not come for Christmas.
“I don’t like saying that the manager should be fired. That’s rude and that’s a man’s job, but I’m at a stage where I feel I can’t stand Reuben Amorim’s job.”
“It’s inevitable that this will happen before Christmas. His performance is incredible for a manager at Manchester United. Having played 50 games as manager at Manchester United, he’s only two more goals than he’s conceded.”
Throughout the 50 matches he was in charge, it became clear that Amorim was struggling because he was unable to win consecutive Premier League games.
The loss in the final match of the Europa League last season and his performance itself have been a further disappointment for the Portuguese manager.
United have already lost to Arsenal, Manchester City and Burnley this season, and have been eliminated in the Carabao Cup after an unprecedented defeat to Grimsby in League 2.
Carrager’s verdict was also supported by United legend Paul Scholes, suggesting that the manager has exhausted his grace period given the long-term slump.
“I think we’ve come to a point where we don’t want to talk about the manager’s dismissal all the time with Reuben Amorim, but Manchester United is giving the managers plenty of time,” he said.
“He’s never going to get booed by the fans, and before Brentford’s game (losing 3-1), I thought, ‘He’s been taking a little too long.’ I feel like it’s only a matter of time before things end.”
