Legendary former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmichel swiped for Andre Onana and Altai Bayindeal while acclaiming Senne Ranmen’s debut. After an impressive first outing, the iconic “keeper” quickly managed the expectations surrounding Lammen after his first start. The summer recruits debuted on Saturday afternoon and kept their clean sheets in a 2-0 victory over the newly promoted Sunderland.
In a bold move, Reuben Amorim decided to bench Benindiel and give Lammens the opportunity to impress just before an international break. His introduction has come at a challenging time for United goalkeepers, with both Bay Indeal and Onana making some well-known blunt instruments. Onana recently temporarily switched to Trabzonspor, allowing the 23-year-old to move up the ranks at Old Trafford and challenge Bayindir to try out a spot in the starting lineup.
Schmeichel couldn’t resist pointing out past mistakes from the goalkeeper who returned in unity.
And while the early signs are promising for Lammen, the goalkeeper, who won multiple Premier Leagues, stressed that he didn’t want to put too much pressure on him.
“Think about the goalkeepers we’ve had over the past few years and the number of goals we’ve admitted from errors. We’ve already had nine errors this season.
“I went back when I played, my instructions were the same as Edwin (Vander Sal) and David DeGear. We had to save 10 points per season.
“First, it’s good to see a clean sheet. Then it’s a really good goalkeeping performance. What you see, you see this young young man, he had nothing to do for a long time, he literally had the ball only at his feet, and he did very well.
“From a young goalkeeper these days — you’d expect it because it’s the way it grew up — so he looked like Edwin, who saves to the left first.
“I think his confidence has grown, you could see from the first cross, Matigis de Liguto’s response was great. The defenders hope they can get rid of some of that pressure under the coche.”
Schmeichel added: “It’s not happening a bit at Man UTD. Of course, the defenders were happy about it. It was premature to talk about it.
“Unfortunately, we’ve seen it over the years, and great players appear on humans, the pressure is unforgiving, and then they can’t deal with it.
“He’s done well, he now has an international break in the next game where he has to do the same.
“Then how he develops and every goalkeeper makes mistakes, that’s when we know how we respond to those mistakes.
