Jarrell Kuansa invaded Liverpool’s first team under Jurgen Klopp and played in Arne Slot last season, but decided that it would be time to move to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer
Former Liverpool defender Jarrell Kuanza has revealed his reasons for leaving Anfield. Quansah is one of the high-profile sales signed off by the Reds after a Premier League victory, joining Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million, acknowledging his desire for normal minutes that was regularly considered in his decision.
Quansah faced Ipswichtown in August 2024 in Arne Slot’s first Premier League match, but was replaced at halftime and failed to drive Ibrahi Maconate away for the rest of the season. The centre-back completed 90 in three of Liverpool’s 38 league matches. Two of them have already secured the top spot after not convincing his qualities.
It seemed like a move would have been necessary if the World Cup was given the opportunity to create a team for Thomas Touchel in North America at the horizon. So far, it’s a very good thing for Quansah, an unused alternative to Serbia in September and part of Tuchel’s choice for upcoming games with Wales and Latvia.
Quansah is grateful for the football education he received at Anfield, but he insists that it’s right to move on. “I’m learning from the best players around me at Liverpool,” he said.
“To be able to do that is very good for my career. It’s always been a big part of that. In this part of my career, at age 22 (January), I need to be where I need hundreds of games.
Quansah is already impressed by the UK at an age group level. He played every minute of last summer’s European Under 21 Championship, helping Lee Carsley’s young Lions go all the way in Slovakia.
The final of that tournament was against Germany, and England won 3-2 after spending extra time. Many of that German side’s opponents are currently opponents at the club level, with Kuanza scoring in Lebakusen’s Bundesliga debut and starting all six league matches.
But there was a bit of confusion among all his progress. Erik Ten Hag signed the defender in the summer, but successor Kasper Hjulmand had clearly thought up some of his plans, but continued two league games before he got the bag.
The British started on Saturday in the back three, when HJulmand’s team defeated Union Berlin 2-0, extending their unbeaten league record to five games on the bounce, and climbing to fifth in the table. Quansah began both Leverkusen’s Champions League matches, facing FC Copenhagen and PSV Eindhoven, and did a major test against the next Holders Paris Saint-Germain.
