On a very extreme afternoon for Reuben Amorim, Manchester United gear was finally clicked. Reuben Amorim can enjoy a rest during an international break after a comfortable 2-0 victory at Sunderland.

United’s poor form has grown pressure and scrutiny in Amorim over the last few weeks, and it was essential that United signed off for an international break with positive results. Taken a step forward, Mason Mount gave United the perfect platform to do it with a crisp finish, eight minutes after being skillfully selected by Brian Mbeumo in the penalty area.

The hosts kept the score down with Robin Lovs on the away goal, continuing to block Amado, Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandez. But he was helpless on the 30-minute mark when Benjamin Sesco first finished in a six-yard box to give United breathing space.

Both sides traded chances in the second half, but United weren’t too troubling as they saw the game to record a big win for the head coach. Here, Mirror Football is looking at the topic of the game…

1. United will ultimately deliver as a must-see game

It may be the first weekend of October, but the game felt like a must-see area for Amorim and United. And they’ve delivered here for all the criticism levelled by the Portuguese coach and his team in recent weeks.

United are far more fluent, seeing Man United play at his Sunderland home and seeing how they expect it in honor of their visitors. Amad was very effective at the right-wing back, and Bruno Fernandez was once again playing a deeper role, but was deeply involved in the senior position and only denied the goal by exceptional saves from ROEFS.

On an afternoon when something had to give, United stepped up. They could have more goals, but perhaps they should have, but this result could still kickstart for the season.

2. Lammens plays for Keeps

After talking for a few weeks in the goalkeeper situation, Amorim today determined that Ranmen was signing a deadline of £18.2 million for making a bow. And, thankfully, their new man was not disappointed with his maiden’s outing between the sticks.

United desperately needs someone with a strong goal, as they have not persuaded either Altay Bayindir or Andre Onana during Amorim’s tenure. The Runmen was guaranteed here and did not make a mistake in the difficult situation.

If Lammens is United’s number one longest, he saw him do no harm to this display and maintain his team’s first clean sheet.

3. Sesco attacks again

United spent £200 million over the summer dealing with their scoring issues, and now there are signs that the tide may be turning. The club’s marquee signature, Sesko scored in consecutive Premier League matches, with Mbeumo grabbing United’s first assist.

Some of United’s offensive plays were smooth. Mbeumo’s Fizzed Pass Into Mount is of beauty, and the former Chelsea midfielder’s finish made it justice.

It’s still early, but given the club’s spending, United’s new signature will be scrutinized in terms of returns. However, as we did here for Sesco and Mbeumo, there is little dissatisfaction as long as our goals and support continue to come.

4. Roefs Stars in Sunderland

All the talks before the game were runmen’s, but it was Loffs who stole the show in the first half. I tried to put in the first half from Fernandez to the post with a series of fine saves to keep my score down, especially one world-class save.

Sunderland started his life well among the English elite, but struggled to plague the united side.

5. Amorim makes big calls

Undoubtedly, today was huge for Amorim. Was his job on the line, as some suggested? I’m never sure United was given the victory, but it certainly felt like a must-see. And he gave credit where the credit was due, and he got a big call here.

The decision to give Lammens a goal nod was wise and United looked defensively comfortable. Amorim’s 3-4-3 system has done a lot and refused to deviate from it, but key players like Amado and Fernandez were effective here as United decided much needed victory. United’s new look attack also recorded more returns if they were looking for another positive.

This gives him a welcoming breathing space during international breaks. But as positive as this afternoon, if United doesn’t kick after the break, it counts for a moment.
