Marc Guehi was on the verge of joining Liverpool from Crystal Palace on the transfer deadline before the move collapsed, but the English defender is currently focusing on the Eagles

Mark Guech has maintained full focus at Crystal Palace after the deadline switch to Liverpool collapses. England International had agreed to personal terms for the £35 million move to Premier League champions last month.

However, the palace retreated from negotiations after failing to secure a suitable replacement, leaving Guehi’s dream transfer in tatters.

Despite his disappointment, the 25-year-old has maintained his excellent form for the Eagles, securing a 2-1 Premier League victory on Saturday, extending Club Record’s unbeaten streak to 18 games across all competitions after beating Liverpool on a penalty at the Community Shield.

Nevertheless, Guehi’s future appears to be doomed to leave Selhurst Park, Liverpool’s Echo reports. His deal expires at the end of the campaign and he rarely writes new terms.

The Reds maintain their interest in securing his services, but their position after the deadline was that they had no intention of reviving negotiations during the January transfer period.

It remains unclear whether the posture has changed after the catastrophic injury sustained by Giovanni Leoni.

The Palace’s Europa Congress League faced questions at a pre-match press conference on Liverpool’s failed transfer ahead of its meeting Dynamo Kiev on Thursday.

“To be honest, there’s not much to say,” he said. “I am focused on playing and playing football at this club.

“But I would like to thank the fans for your support (I want to say) and I definitely feel that.”

Guehi will be captaining the FA Cup winner with the first fixture in a major European competition with Kyiv. “That’s not something I think about at all. My only focus is on the club. I’m not too worried about personal admiration, as long as the team needs me to be happy.

“When you tasted success, you definitely aren’t satisfied and want more. Everyone at the club is working harder.

“We’ve seen what we can do. I hope that if we keep our heads down, we have more opportunities.”

The Reds posted a £35 million opening bid on the palace just 48 hours before the windows closed.

And while the Eagles had been demanding £40 million, they finally reached a compromise on the deadline to allow Guehi to complete the medical care before the 7pm deadline.

After completing his London medical check-up, the centre-back appeared poised to sign a five-year contract at Anfield.

However, when Brighton’s Julio Igor, who was on the verge of the Lawn Switch crisis, was targeted by West Ham United and prompted a dramatic U-turn, the palace’s own pursuit of replacement collapsed.

This created a domino effect in Guehi’s proposed switch to Merseyside, and Eagles manager Oliver Glasner demanded that proper replacements be ensured.

The palace was able to confirm the French Youth International Jaydie Canbot with a four-year contract, but the 19-year-old is not ready to fill Guehi’s boots at this point in his development.
