Gareth Southgate is being supported on behalf of Manchester United’s Reuben Amorim. Because he’s cheaper than the other candidates and breaks the status quo. Amorim is currently under great pressure after United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday, serving his 17th league loss in just 33 games.

Southgate emerged as a potential successor following claims by Talksport that United co-owner Ir Jim Ratcliffe has already been in direct contact with the former England boss. However, the BBC reports that the Red Devils hierarchy is in full support of Amorim.

Nevertheless, former unit goalkeeper Ben Foster considers Southgate the ideal choice if Southgate chooses to remove the Portuguese head coach from his post. Previously speaking about Fozcast Podcasts, Wrexham Stopper pointed out the fact that the 55-year-old could be a cheap alternative to Crystal Palace Manager Oliver Grassner, Bournemouth boss and Andoniira Aura.

Foster made his comment after Amorim’s players lost faith in his strict style of play and suggested that his days on United’s hot seat were numbered.

“Amorim is on the brink now,” he said. “If they lose another one or two in the next few weeks, he’s gone. Honestly, if he achieves it through an international break, it’s 50/50.

“The predictable nature of it is that it is because everyone knows what to expect.

“Man United’s history is based on the fact that wingers are wider and they put players in the box and put the ball in. When they have a system that is not now, when it’s not working, I can’t blame Man United fans for not being happy.”

Foster added: “If you look at the game, they seem like good players, but there’s no real system. There’s no real talent. There’s no real offensive intention. I think he’s completely killed by Manchester United. The manager can be under really pressure.”

United beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford just 11 days ago, but were unable to advance that form to Brentford over the weekend. In the match, Benjamin Sesco netted his away team’s debut goal, but Bruno Fernandez wasted a penalty after a controversial call that allowed Brentford’s Nathan Collins to stay on the pitch.

Outlined why Southgate likes other potential management candidates, Foster said, “If you’re trying to get an Iraara or a Glassner, it’s going to cost a lot of money. Glasner’s contracts will increase over the summer, but he wants £250,000 a week.

“I think Gareth Southgate is very different from what they’ve done so far, and what they’re doing isn’t working. I’ve seen the past four or five managers since Fergie went.

“I think it’s just how difficult it is to play for Man United and the pressure that comes with pulling that shirt, but sometimes it may require a slightly different approach.”
