A statement from the EFL, which announced the decision, explained: “The EFL Board of Directors today has determined that the Skybet Championship fixture between Blackburn Rover and Ipswich Town needs to be fully revived after it was abandoned on Saturday, September 20th.
“After 79 minutes, when the judges left the pitch after a period of heavy rainfall, the equipment was abandoned and the arena was no longer playable. The board comprehensively considered all available options in accordance with regulations, along with the statements created by both clubs.”
“It was ultimately decided that the fixture should be fully regenerated. The decision should be based on the recent precedents related to abandoned equipment, and, wherever possible, on the complete set of equipment that should be based on the conclusion of the day.
“The Board recognizes this is a very difficult decision and agrees to consult with the club about the best approach to developing new guidance that will be considered in the event of abandonment of games.”
The new date for the fixture will be confirmed by each club in time.
