Former England manager Gareth Southgate declined an offer from Manchester United if current boss Reuben Amorim is fired by Ineos. In March 2024, Southgate was a top candidate for United’s job as club executives were pondering the future of Eric 10 Hug. However, his commitment to leading England to the Euro in the summer proved to be an important hurdle.
After the tournament, Southgate took a step back from the frontline management team and began appointing United co-owner Ir Jim Ratcliffe nearly a year ago to Amorim. Since leaving the role of England, Southgate has not yet returned to football and instead has focused on engagement, motivational work and hosting shows at the BBC.
Southgate will not rush back to football, but is believed to remain open to his options. He has been seen at many football games and other sporting events, and maintains close ties with his former FA colleagues.
Southgate also has close ties with Dan Ashworth. Dan Ashworth had long-term plans to take him to United during his tenure.
However, Ashworth’s stint as Old Trafford’s sports director continued just five months ago before he was fired. With United only winning two of their seven games in all competitions, Amorim is putting pressure on the team’s disastrous start to the season.
Despite being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Underdogs Grimsby Town, United management is not going to dismiss him, but they have maintained full support for Amorim.
United also deny the suggestion that the club is already directly approaching Southgate.
This weekend, United will host Sunderland, flying high before an international break. If Amorim is about putting pressure on international breaks, then positive outcomes at Old Trafford are essential.
As the domestic season resumes, Amorim’s teams are facing a formidable journey of facing their fierce rivals and current champion Liverpool.
If the Portuguese fails to secure a victory in any of these matches, Ratcliffe may be forced to contemplate how to say goodbye to Amorim. However, the termination of Amorim and his coaching staff would cost around £15 million of compensation.
