Reuben Amorim is under great pressure as Manchester United manager after a horrifying start to the season, with Jamie Carrager and Wayne Rooney agreeing to the next step for the club
Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carrager called on Manchester United to plunder Reuben Amorim. Amorim has scored 18 of 18 of 49 games he handled with United, and the club is looking at potential alternatives and is under great pressure.
Things have continued this season in a disastrous way after finishing 15th in the Premier League in 2024/25 and losing to the Europa League final. United are 14th and have won two in six league games, knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League 2 side Grimsby.
Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Brentford means United have not won back-to-back league matches under Amorim, which he has been in charge since November. The Portuguese boss’ tactical system has yet to work, and the offense continues to struggle despite over £200 million spent three forwards during the summer transfer period.
The tide turned on the amorim. Amorim has arrived with a great reputation since its time with Sport Lisbon, but I am not sure. Ahead of Saturday’s important must-see match against the newly promoted Sunderland, Karager sought Amorim to escape his misery.

“This was a disaster not only for Manchester United, but for Reuben Amorim,” he said on Sky’s Monday night football. “What he did in Sports Lisbon was great. He looked like the next big thing as a manager, but bringing in such a manager from the perspective of the system he played and I don’t think I really fit into the Manchester United tradition.
“The more Manchester United made a decision to their manager, the more I said it was a disaster for the club, but it also awaits something inevitable for the manager. Unfortunately, like Duncan (Ferguson) said, people don’t want to lose their jobs, but they have to finish as quickly as possible.”
Carragher has spent his career with Liverpool rivals and has no skin in the game. However, Rooney is a unified legend and, as he has two sons at the club’s academy, he carefully measures his words. He gave a similar point after the Brentford match.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” he said on the Wayne Rooney show. “I tried management hands, but it didn’t work. I know. Reuben Amorim is my age. He’s still a young manager and I’m sure he still has a big future for him.
“But what’s going on with Man United – this isn’t Man United. Honestly, I hope he can turn it around. And then, after everything I saw, honestly, I couldn’t believe it.
“I’ve never seen anything that gives me confidence. There needs to be a big change in my opinion. Managers, players, whatever it is. Anything needed to get Manchester United back.”
The Sunderland match is very important for Amorim, who knows there will be an international break for the next two weeks. Apart from his victory over the Black Cat at Old Trafford, he was able to take charge of the end of his spell, and Blake was able to give INEOS time to line up alternatives.
