Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney says he’s not sure he’s the guy who turns things around at his old club after seeing Reuben Amorim lose again over the weekend
Wayne Rooney says he saw nothing to suggest that Reuben Amorim could turn things around at Manchester United after admitting he had “no faith” to the former sports Lisbon chief following Saturday’s defeat at Brentford.
United were beaten 3-1 by the bees. That is, Amorim has yet to win a Premier League match since arriving at Old Trafford in November. The Portuguese coach has managed just 34 points from the 33 league matches he overseen during that period, and scrutiny is beginning to grow with the difficult United Chief, who has also been rising, with gazes that have refused to deviate from his preferred 3-4-2-1 system.
Amorim’s passionate record continues to be questioned, but United’s Top Brass claims they have no plans to replace their managers. However, Rooney says he has never seen anything in the last 11 months to convince him that the turnaround is imminent.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” the former England and Manchester United striker said in the latest edition of his new BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show. “I tried management hands, but it didn’t work. I know. Reuben Amorim is my age. He’s still a young manager and I’m sure he still has a big future for him.
“But what’s going on with Man United – this isn’t Man United. Honestly, I hope he can turn it around. And then, after everything I saw, honestly, I couldn’t believe it.
“I’ve never seen anything that gives me confidence. There needs to be a big change in my opinion. Managers, players, whatever it is. Anything needed to get Manchester United back.”
United spent over £260 million on new players over the summer. This included £200 million in three new attackers, Matthews Cuña, Brian Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesco.
Rooney doesn’t believe Amorim is the right person to solve United’s problems, but he reveals that he has problems far beyond his manager, saying “the soul of the club is gone.”
“I don’t recognize the entire football club,” he added. “I haven’t seen players fighting, I can’t see the characters. I don’t want to win. I’m going here again, looking at the game, hoping.
He continued. “It’s not just the outcome of the pitch. It’s all about the club that needs fixes. Jimratcliffe and Ineos took on a real challenge.
“The soul has left the club. We need a new engine, a new lease of life. We need something to start that football club.”
