Gary Neville has expressed serious concern about Reuben Amorim’s future at Manchester United following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford. The Red Devils were unable to tie back-to-back Premier League victories under Amorim after a disappointing performance at GTECH Community Stadium.
United wanted their 2-1 victory over Chelsea, which could represent a fork moment, as the previous Saturday was about to gain traction under the former sports boss. Benjamin Sesco found the net for his first United goal, but a devastating first half double from the late efforts of Igor Thiago and Matthias Jensen denounced the Red Devils for a pointless journey from West London.
The defeat escalated Amorim after United’s worst show in Premier League history, sparking a brooding finish in 15th place in the final campaign. Former United skipper and defender Neville offers a deep and troubling verdict on Amorim’s outlook at Old Trafford.
“I’m very worried. It doesn’t make sense to sit here and say I’m not,” he told NBC. “Yesterday, performance, results, alternative levels.
“At the end of Grimsby’s game, I saw what I lost in the Carabao Cup a few weeks ago.
“We respect our system for our stubborn, resilient managers, and we want them to stick to the plan, but when Mason Mount plays left-back, he’s going to look pretty stupid.
“It’s happening twice now and it’s not happening. It was the first time I thought it was unforgivable and it happened again yesterday.
“He changes back three and back five for each match, and his performance and results are unacceptable.
“I’m really worried. I know how difficult the manager’s job is and I’m not going to be on TV because the manager said he should be fired, but the Manchester United hierarchy wants to see the turnaround.”
