Arne Slot watched Liverpool lose an unbeaten start in the Premier League and denounced Jeremy Fripon for the winner of Crystal Palace’s dramatic final gasp. Eddie Nketia hit the Palace winner in the 97th minute at Selhurst Park as Liverpool’s five-game winning streak ended in the league.

The palace deserved a winner, dominated the opening stage and advanced Ismailasar’s goals from the corner. Allison kept Liverpool in the game with some great saves and it seemed they were rescued when Federico Chiesa was fired when Var cleared Mohamed Sara from a potential handball.

However, as Liverpool returned to the mixer on Will Hughes’ header, Palace grabbed three points from the long throw-in. Nketiah had considerable control over the ball before firing Allison, sending the house crowd into the wild.

Frimon came in on behalf of Ibrahima Conate in the 74th minute and was stuck under the ball as he was mistakenly seen by his fellow alternative Curtis Jones. He lost Nketia, who used the space to blow up Allison.

“We can only blame ourselves for following our own ways,” Slot said before implying Frimon’s mistake. “One of our players was exhausted because he wanted to counterattack.

“At that moment, one player was bothered me too offensively, winning a winner, leading us to lose the game.”

Liverpool had benefited from many of his slow targets this season, but was on the receiving end on Saturday. “It was a disappointing first half and a disappointing end to the game,” Slot added.

“Credit to the Palace – Community Shield is not the first time we’ve lost to them. They deserved to be two or three in the first half, and the second half was far better than us.

“It took me a while to score the goal. It’s just as disappointing as I did in the first half to acknowledge another set piece goal. Today, one team was in the palace.”

Asked about acknowledging both goals from the set piece after Sarr’s opener came from the corner, Slot added:

“We barely acknowledged the set’s work. Now that we’ve recognized two against Newcastle and we’ve recognized two today, that’s what we need to do better. But this league is increasingly about set pieces.

“We had to defend a lot of them too, and the margins are small. One of the last players will run forward and perhaps try to counter the offense with a second goal, but in that area the ball will fall for the Crystal Palace player scoring.”
