Reuben Amorim is sure he is still the right man to turn Manchester United’s fate despite a 3-1 defeat at Brentford. Since being appointed United Manager almost 12 months ago, Amorim has only secured 34 points from a 99 chance, taking charge of nine of the 33 Premier League matches. These victories were not in a row after being defeated by the bees at the Gtech Community Stadium.

United, who took part in the match after beating Chelsea, were chasing 2-0 within 20 minutes of the opening as Brentford striker Igor Thiago netted the brace. Benjamin Sesco responded with his first United goal following a £74 million summer transfer. Captain Bruno Fernandez saw a penalty saved when Brentford’s substitute Mattias Jensen killed the match at halt, closing the miserable afternoon for United.

Despite this disappointment, Amorim revealed that he has no plans to quit as United boss.

“I’ve always done my job,” Amorim said. “If I win, I’m in a different state of mind. It’s normal, but I know what to do, so I’m always confident. It’s my job, and I’m not just about protecting the players.

“I’m trying to do the best thing for the club and the team, but that’s the pressure on the club. So I just think what’s the best way to win the next game is. I’m not trying to protect the players or myself. I’m trying to win the next game and gain momentum.

“I’m trying to be really objective in analyzing the games. Today we played Brentford games, not our own games. And when you play your opponent’s games, it’s hard to win.

“When we win, it’s not the system. It’s when it’s the system. I understand that. I think it’s about playing this game like Brentford wanted to play this game.

“We didn’t settle down to play the game. We didn’t push our opponents. Every time they recovered the ball, they ran and they knew they were going to fight for the ball. We need to work on a lot of things.

“My biggest concern is that we didn’t settle in the game. In the last third, we missed many crosses. It’s frustrating. We can make the ball better. We can have more control. We can still control the ball if it’s not your favour, if momentum isn’t your favour, we can still control the ball.

“Everything, moments, penalties, fouls before the first goal, all of these things oppose us, we need to have more personality to control the game and calm the game down.

“When you win, you feel that momentum is all here. When you lose, you go back to the same place and fight again for one victory that will help you create momentum.”

United Forword Matheus Cunha added:

“It’s very frustrating to not come here and win because we know that every game in the Premier League is important to us this season. We need to do more.”
