With Amorim overseeing the big summer changes and new signature bedding, the club may have reason to look into the tables rather than down.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of his trip to Brentford, the manager said how important it is for teams to start finding some consistency in the league.
“For me, the most important thing is to start the game in the way we started playing against Chelsea, how we played against Burnley, how we played against Arsenal,” Amorim said.
“These kinds of games, we need to really focus and feel that we need to win every game.”
Positive signs are beginning to appear on the pitch, and now United are leading the league in total shots and XG leagues in an offensive sense, ranking highly on other metrics such as opposition box touches and big opportunities.
The latest Opta Supercomputer gives United only a 6.2% chance of a best finish (and worryingly, the chances of being kicked out at 6.6% are slightly higher), but the club will appear to defy these odds in the coming weeks and months.
“It’s really important for us to have a sense of urgency that we need to win no matter what, and that’s going to be really difficult,” he admitted.
“Every time you start preparing for the game and see your next opponent, I think, ‘It’s really, really, really difficult.’ I have that feeling.”

United have the most Premier League title to date, and from experience they won nothing after five games. This early stage shows that the outcome of the entire campaign has not been determined.
They won twice, lost twice, draw one from the opening five matches, and scored seven points.
It’s a bit worrying, but this is the same as last season’s record. When they finished 15th, history says it’s never a disaster.
In the 2020/21 season, United came in second only after missing the title of local rival Manchester City when they scored the same record after five matches under All Gunner Solskager.
This is also the record for the first Premier League campaign in 1992/93, and of course it must be noted that Irish Alex Ferguson’s team has ended the drought of 26 years of top flight titles and set out to a dominant period in which he won 13 titles in 21 years.
Of these successes, six people won, and the Red Devils scored under 10 points from the equipment in opening five.
In 1996/97 they won their fourth title in five years despite only nine points from their first five points.
Two years later, in 1998/99, United scored just eight points after opening a five-round match, but of course it was long forgotten as they not only lifted the Premier League by May, but also won the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League as part of their historic treble.
They had the same opening record for their title wins in 2002/03, 2007/08, and 2008/09.
Man Utd after 5 games per Premier League season
United are worse than their current total after five games in their three Premier League seasons.
In 2004/05, with just six points after five games, they still finished third behind Chelsea and Arsenal.
Ten years later, the Louis Van Girl team scored just five points from the opening five games, but managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League with a fourth-place finish.
Eric Ten Hag oversaw United by collecting six points out of the 15 possible in 2023/24 as the club was surprised by the eighth place finish at the end of the campaign.
However, they still managed to finish the season after Alejandro Garnacho and Cobby Mineu scored a victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Strangely enough, it was United’s best start to the Premier League season, and it was 2011/12 when they charged the maximum points from their first five, a year that mostly forgotten as they finished second in City with a dramatic final day, Sergio Aguero-inspired fashion.
Ultimately, it seems unwise for United or others about it to come to conclusions about the overall season after such a small sample size.
A start-start may indicate how things are progressing, but it never draws the big picture.
Amorim and his team aim to change the early narrative surrounding United, which began at the GTECH Community Stadium.
